Glendale City Council Approves Artsakh Ave. Renaming

Glendale CA – On Tuesday, June 12 Glendale City Council passed a resolution renaming the two blocks of Maryland Avenue between Wilson Avenue and Harvard Street to Artsakh Avenue. Mayor Sinanyan, Councilmembers Najarian, Gharpetian and Agajanian voted for, while Councilmember Devine abstained. The Council also passed a resolution authorizing limited reimbursements of specified costs associated with the street name change, and appropriated $131,000 to address the fiscal impact. The Armenian National Committee of America Glendale Chapter (ANCA Glendale) expressed strong support of the resolution and urged city staff to assist the business community with the financial impact of the street name change. On May 31, 2018 ANCA Glendale boar member Ronnie Gharibian and Community Outreach Director Margarita Baghdasaryan attended the formal swearing-in ceremony of newly appointed Glendale Chief of Police Carl Povilaitis. ANCA Glendale is looking forward to working with Chief Povilaitis in the years to come to ensure the safety and prosperity of this great City Chief Carl Povilaitis was appointed to Police Chief on May 1, 2018. He has been serving the Glendale community for the past 27 years. He began his career in law enforcement with the Glendale Police Department in 1990 after graduating from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Academy class 267 in February of 1991. ANCA GLENDALE GRANTS SCHOLARSHIPS TO TWO LOCAL STUDENTS

On Tuesday, June 4th the Armenian National Committee of America – Glendale (ANCA Glendale) awarded two local high school students the ANCA Glendale “Tsolag Hovsepian” Upstander Scholarship. Founded in partnership with the Glendale Unified School District, with this scholarship ANCA Glendale aims to recognize outstanding students who have demonstrated a strong sense of social responsibility, commitment to justice, and taken the initiative to stand up for an individual or group of people who are being disadvantaged. Herbert Hoover High School senior Amira Chowdhury who is a founding member of Peerlift, a student run non-profit organization working to increase access to college related opportunities for low income students was one of the two students awarded the five hundred dollar scholarship.
